Art in Progress

Hello, since getting Painter X in September I’ve been trying to get better and learn more about the program. It’s a bit different then Photoshop in some of the way it works. The best description that made me go AH-HA was it’s just like using traditional mediums. Coming from Photoshop I had been big on having LOTS of different layers so I wouldn’t muck up anything, but in Painter blending works better if you put “paint” on top of “paint”. Of course you still use layers or you can still use layers. I’ve started with a mix of both layers and painting straight.

Still trying to get my line work to look good drawing straight into the program. I still rush too much because I’m excited to learn and finish pieces. I haven’t tried much with scanned in pictures yet..

Here’s what I’ve been working on:

That’s Taiga Aisaka from the anime Toradora. My lines still aren’t pristine, but they’re definitely not as sketchy as the portraits I did. I’m really happy with how the hair looks it’s pretty and looks sort of golden. I’d almost like to push that more but I figured I’d move on. Of course the body is still in progress... I stopped because I couldn’t focus any more. I was at work and I started getting a tension headache, so I figured best to quit before it got real bad.

Next, this was before the portraits and Taiga:

It’s Hatsune Miku in an original design. I didn’t want to look up any reference for her song costumes and I’ve already drawn her in her original outfit. It’s really sketchy and... messy, I’m not really sure how I’ll proceed with it. I may redo the line work and tighten it up or I may just color it and not have lines.

Well there’s the progress I’ve been making. I should work on the calendar art some more... but I’m so enticed by Painter. After I finish the one I’m working on in photoshop I’ll probably move the rest to Painter. I have to see if it’ll look to jarring in comparison, but I don’t think it will.

New Projects

Hatsune Miku rough sketch

After Heroes Con I knew I needed to work on some more art if I want to attend Animazement in 2010 and have stuff to sell. So in addition to continuing to work on the calendar I’m going to do some fan art pieces. These won’t be as elaborate as the calendar work, since I won’t really have time to do work like that. But they’ll still be amazing PROMISE! The above is the second picture I’ve done, while the first was actually before I thought about going to Animazement.

The series/characters I’m planning on doing:
Toradora
Hatsune Miku/Vocaloid
Hell Girl
Familiar of Zero
Shakugan no Shana

I may do some others, but those are the ones I really want to do for now.

Upgrade to the Future

Photobucket

For the last month or two I’ve been dying to upgrade my computer program for digital art. Right now I’m using Photoshop CS for my digital coloring and it’s all I have. While I can do some nice work I still feel limited and restricted by the program. For one it’s primarily supposed to be used for photo editing and I’m trying to use it for more artistic purposes.

I’ve been looking strongly towards Painter 11 but also at Photoshop CS4, since it’s been retooled to work a little more on the art side. Still I think Painter 11 is the way to go so I can do more natural media type work. The only thing holding me back right now is price... phew 400 bucks! Not as bad as CS4’s 600....

I also wonder if my equipment will hold up. I plan on installing on my MacBook Pro, but am unsure if it’ll be powerful enough. Second my wacom table is pretty old, it’s a Intuos 2, I think. Still better then nothing and I really think it’d work just fine for want I want.

Hopefully I’ll be able to upgrade in a few months time because I’m really dying to work on the computer to create art.
